Algues (french for algae). Think of it as seaweed-shaped Legos for adults which Fortune Magazine voted "Best Products of the Year: Home and Health 2004." "All design should be this much fun," says Wakefield. Once again, the Bouroullec brothers have introduced a product that reflects their unconventional and innovative design approach allowing purchasers of Algues to be more than just consumers but also participants in the design process. You can snap together the plastic seaweedy shapes in myriad ways to create a curtain, a room divider, or an art installation. Add more pieces for greater opacity; take some away for a lacy effect. can be a curtain, divider, faux hedge or whatever you would like it to be. In a short film playing in an exhibition space, the Bouroullecs call Algues an open system of flexible geometry, and show how it can be used as a room divider, an outdoor screen, or a tent-like drape. Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, the designers of the Joyn office system from Vitra Design, were inspired by the image of sunlight filtering through trees when envisioning Algues the result is a plant-like creation, flexible, strong and providing the opportunity to construct interwoven structures of substantial dimensions. Thanks to 19 ring-like eyes at the end of their branches, endless applications are possible, from a delicate web that could be used in place of a curtain or as a trellis for climbing plants, to an impenetrable dense plastic hedge consisting of several layers of inter-connected Algues that could serve as a room divider.
Algues is a plant-like plastic creation, filigreed, flexible and strong. Each piece is an asymmetrically shaped branching component 12" x 8" x 2". An infinite number of design configurations is possible by joining them together with small plastic pegs at one or several points. The user can create a myriad of interwoven structures that resemble a huge spiders web, a curtain, a trellis, a hedge and more! An exclusive product of Vitra.
