Norman Cherner began designing for Plycraft in 1958. His chairs are found in design collections throughout the world, including the Vitra Design Museum. The ‘Cherner Chair’ combines graceful curving bentwood shapes and slender laminated legs with a one-piece molded plywood seat of tapering laminations.
Produced nearly half a century ago, Norman Cherner designs are found in residences, galleries and museums across the US and abroad. Cherner designed furniture for Konweiser, Hayworth, Gunlocke, Modern Mode and Branrud.
The Cherner Chair Company is reissuing his most popular designs from the 50’s and 60’s by combining the most modern and the original manufacturing technology to duplicate authentic Norman Cherner designs. Norman Cherner also designed tables that have won awards from such prestigious institutions as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
The Cherner Chair Company is the sole licensor of Norman Cherner designs and has reissued Norman Cherner's most popular designs from the 50’s and 60’s. All products are manufactured from the original drawings, molds and specifications, which insures that you are getting authentic Norman Cherner designs. Norman Cherner’s designs are part of the iconography of mid 20th century furniture design. As a pioneer of modern furniture design, Norman Cherner’s chairs, tables and casegoods have shown and enduring popularity since their introduction nearly fifty years ago.
We also carry the Cherner tables with wood tops in either beech or walnut veneers, the same finishes as Cherner seating products. Like the originals, the Cherner Chairs utilize a molded plywood seat with a unique construction of laminated plywood of graduated thickness. This feature, plus the molding of compound curves, permits a structurally superior chair which is sculpted in form and ergonomically designed.
